Also, here's an alternate version of the Star Rod one. I had drawn in the little Dark Matter blobs before I remembered they weren't in the same game, but I thought they were cute enough to keep. Disclaimer here in case some individual decides to take me to task for it, though.

Work has been consuming me but I've been trying to keep drawing for myself on the side when I have the time and energy (now I'm on vacation though so I should have a lot more time to art!). Over on my tumblr I've decided to take up some drawing/fandom challenges, and the topic of the month for December is my old friend Pokémon!! It's cool to revisit some of these old designs I've been familiar with for over ten years, with a new set of skills and ideas.

Here's a collage of what I have for about half the month. I've been trying to do something different with each one. It's fun to experiment!

MOTORCITY PREMIERE

Quick 'n dirty fanart of Mike and Chuck in honour of MOTORCITY premiering tomorrow!! I've been busy lately doing cleanup on this show and am proud and happy to be able to call myself part of the team along with no shortage of talented and hardworking people. :D

I'll be drawing the rest of the characters eventually but this will do for now. WATCH THIS SHOW GUYS, it is beautifully animated and a lot of fun, and the first episode is available for free download on the iTunes store!

I'm struggling to make drawing for myself a habit again (before I was unmotivated because I was stressed and not very happy, and now I'm just really busy), but I think I'm settled in enough at my job to start trying new things of my own again. Excitement!

The Bunny That Fell To Earth

Tribute art based on Naughty Rabbits, an iPhone game that I designed the characters for!



If you have an iPhone or iPad, check this one out. It's based around the myth of the rabbit in the moon from traditional Chinese folklore - apparently that rabbit's extended family is misbehaving and attempting to free-fall down to earth, and you have to help them get back home! I can't post any concept art I did for the game just yet, but once I get the green light I will probably do so here!

I've been trying to get back into drawing full backgrounds, I realized I haven't really finished a picture with a background since my thesis, and that's a little sad! I have a work in progress that I'm thinking about livestreaming sometime tomorrow... I'll post on my otherwise rather dusty Twitter account when the time comes.

got the idea to make these smash balls a while back, the technique from a good friend that once gave me some gem-magnets as a birthday gift! I made this batch as an experiment that turned out surprisingly well, but I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with them all now. magnets, bracelets, hair accessories, paperweights, could sculpt some characters to hold them, I definitely want to make a necklace for myself from one - agh the possibilities!

making fan-stuff is good for pushing oneself out of a rut. :D

you don't scare me

I was hoping to finish this game before I drew this but since that probably won't be for a while:



Here's little miss Sakamoto from Cave Story, who's already one of my favourites! I love how scrappy she comes across so I had to draw her all messed up but still ready for action. :D

If you don't know what Cave Story is, it's an indie 8-bit styled free-to-play platformer made completely by one man, Japanese developer and artist Pixel.. The designs are appealing, the story is really engaging, and it's just a lot of fun! I also think it's super cool that Pixel has kept it free to play online even though it's now out for download on the Wii, and soon to come to the 3DS (but I recommend playing it on the PC first and foremost, since Nintendo did change some things in their port and I'm always for experiencing something as the artist intended). If I've piqued your interest at all - and I hope I have - do check out the game here! I definitely recommend it.

I was trying to incorporate some background references to places in the game, but it wasn't working out so I went with my original simpler idea. Not the most interesting image in the world but I'm trying to make more complete images instead of just having a character on a blank background. Starting to get more into it, I think!

I'm convinced that (if it wanted to, which I doubt) the Kirby franchise could birth the most adorable and disturbing example of cartoon violence. dichotomies intrigue me, and impossibly cute small things that kick a large amount of ass has always been a favourite - explains my love for Kirby and the Powerpuff Girls, among other things. expect more drawings in this vein. :B

I've been doing so much animation at work that I'm proud of, I can't wait to update my reel! :D

tall grass habitat

perfectionism and control-freakiness when it comes to animating scenes resulting in overtime and much hair-pulling, combined with the wish for more time and energy to play video games - among other things - can be a lethal mixture. it leads to silly flash doodles and easy amusement. but who doesn't like silly flash doodles?

another one for the last-day-of-the-month posts! lotsa doodling been going on here, which is awesome. primarily fanart because lately I've been feeling more like drawing other people's characters than my own for the most part.

first off, some fanart for Kirby! I love this character, and this about sums up why:


I got inspired by the old 90's Kirby ads (and super smash bros of course) on these drawings. I've been enamoured with that loose 'n squishy way of drawing -- and animating! -- recently. :)







had to give Rick, Coo, Kine and Whispy some love too. :B


some doodles of my character Switch -- designed around my western zodiac sign (gemini) and how that relates to my personality. she's a lot of fun to draw if a little difficult to nail sometimes, but I've definitely captured how I intended her to look in these.

more pokemon art because I've been playing a lot of Soul Silver recently! the game's as addictive as ever.





one of the first things my beedrill Needles did after he evolved from a kakuna was to hug me! I thought that was so cute I had to make a drawing capturing the touching moment between a trainer and her giant bipedal apian monster.


he's just learnt twineedle and is thus more badass than ever. and that'll be all for now.

well it feels like being ten again

I have my copy of Pokemon Soul Silver! and of course I had to make an illustration to commemorate the occasion:


drawing myself as a ten year old is a lot of fun. :)



I've got really really fond memories of the gold-silver/Johto generation of pokemon and being excited as all getout about it coming out when I was a kid, so it makes me really happy that I'll be able to play these games all spiffed up on my DS. and with some really cool extra features no less!



of course who could forget the originals? charmander remains my favourite starter pokemon of all time ever. :D



my friend Gio thinks I'm a fool for being of this opinion, so I drew us as Red and Blue for laughs. I'm probably going to draw a better version and colour it. I'm not a huge fan of the way the people look in the games/show but it felt weird to draw them too differently. I also got a cheap old copy of Pokemon Colosseum for the gamecube (which I'd never played) that I've been playing on my wii, so I'm probably going to be drawing more pokemon stuff!

seems to be a thing with me that I make a post on the last day of every month! I've been so busy helping out my friends among SVA's current crop of seniors with their thesis films, and between that and working I haven't had much time for art of my own sadly. but now they're done and the Dusty screenings are coming up next week! if you got an evening to kill on Tuesday the 4th, go catch the show. :) it's at the SVA theater on west 21st street, at 7 PM.

I know I say this a lot, but my blog shall be getting more love. :D

it's gonna be fine, oh-nine

okay it's almost lunar new year so it feels more like 2008 is officially history. hope it's been a blast so far, I know it's been great for me. :) it's going to be an exciting year since I'm graduating and then if all goes well will stay on in New York for an extra year to do some work study. whoooo employment.

anyways, new year means new sketchbook! recycled paper yay.

I've since finished colouring, but I like it like this too. :D

OMG PPG!!!!! I was obsessed with this show back in the day. the marathon on CN and the new anniversary ep was a good enough trigger to get me back into it. I am so proud of my Mojo Jojo considering I didn't draw him much even back then and I used only minimal reference for his face. yeah I watched that show waaaay too much har.

my old fear of markers seems to have done a 180 degree turn, because apparently I love them now. HOORAY. I need more.
